The data protection supervisory authorities in Germany
In Germany, independent data protection supervisory authorities ensure that data protection laws are complied with. They monitor both private companies and public bodies when processing personal data. At federal level, the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (BfDI) is responsible, in particular for federal authorities and telecommunications providers.
The data protection authorities of the 16 federal states are responsible for the supervision of companies and state authorities. These state data protection authorities are committed to ensuring compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and investigate complaints from citizens. They offer advice, investigate data protection violations and impose fines for infringements.
Through their work, the supervisory authorities promote awareness of data protection and strengthen trust in digital processes. Data protection violations can be reported to the competent authorities, who also encourage preventive measures to improve data protection.
